One important but often overlooked vehicle maintenance product is paint protection film. Clear paint protection films can be applied to areas of your car's body where the paint may become scratched or nicked. Some vehicle owners will apply the film to the front of their vehicle to protect the paint from stone chips, sticky bug grime, and other debris. It can also be applied elsewhere on the car where the paint may become damaged, such as behind door handles or on the rocker panels.

What does paint protection film actually protect against?

Paint protection film is a clear urethane layer applied over a vehicle's painted panels, so the film takes the damage instead of the paint. The nanoGard BodyGard range is built at 8 to 8.5 MIL thick and absorbs stone chips, road debris, abrasion, bug residue, pollution and UV exposure — the everyday damage that dulls a finish long before the paint itself fails. Films are usually applied to the front of the vehicle, where stone chips land, and to the panels that get handled: behind door handles, along rocker panels, around loading edges. Where are nanoGard paint protection films made?

The nanoGard range is manufactured in the United States by Erikson International, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The single exception is BodyGard ECO, the entry film in the range, which is made in South Korea. No nanoGard film is sourced from China. Country of origin is worth asking about with any clear film: the urethane, the adhesive and the topcoat decide whether a film yellows, lifts at its edges or clouds after a few seasons of heat, and those are set at the plant rather than by the installer.

Does paint protection film turn yellow?

Not on a modern film. Yellowing was a failure mode of early PPF, where UV exposure degraded the adhesive and the urethane over a few seasons. Every BodyGard film is coated to be non-yellowing, and the coating also drives the water beading that keeps dust and washing residue from bonding to the surface. That matters more in the Gulf than in temperate markets, because the film is under intense sun for most of the year.
